Abstract

This article concerns the topic of the ‘Eastern question’ and the role of Russia in the struggle of the great powers for the possession of the Holy Places of Palestine. The relevance of the topic is due to the fact that every year the scientific community is presented with new data from archives. The article makes an attempt to trace the history of the development of the ‘Eastern question’ and consider Russia’s role of in its solution. The study is based on the diary entries of Bishop Porfiry (Uspensky), as well as diary entries of contemporaries of the events in question and diplomatic documents of that time.
