St. Alexander Nevsky and Novgorod Archbishops of his Time

Abstract

The article deals with the relationship between the secular and the ecclesiastical authorities in Novgorod during the reign of Alexander Nevsky. Dramatic circumstances of the life of Russia led both parties to cooperation, which was the beginning of the elevation of Novgorod Archbishops in the internal structure of the political system of Veliky Novgorod. The author notes the importance of the pastoral position of the archbishops, who were aware of their responsibility for the fate of the city.
