Abstract

Professor’s Ivan Koenig article presents a historical review and comparative analysis of the mystical and ascetic teachings of two primary East’s and West’s monastic writings fi gures in the IV–V centuries — Evagrius of Pontus and Saint John Cassian. The latter transferred and spread the ideas of Eastern monasticism in the West, borrowing many crucial ideas about ascetical teaching from Evagrius of Pontus. However the mystical teaching by Saint John Cassian diverges from the Evagrius of Pontus’ teachings, Saint John adheres to the church tradition refi ned from origenistic and evagrian ideas what was done also by himself, and thereby stands at the origins of the hesychast movement in the Church.
