Abstract

The article examines the controversial attempts of roman catholic theologians of the 20th century to attract the teachings of the outstanding late Byzantine orthodox theologian St. Nicholas Cabasilas as a substantiation for the mariological dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The article critically assesses the methods of theological analysis applied by various latin theologians to the teachings of St. Nicholas Cabasilas in order to attract them to be in favor of the latin mariological dogmas and summarizes assessments on the matter from well-known orthodox and roman catholic theologians, as well as tracks the influence exerted on this process by the Second Vatican Council.
