Jean-Claude Larchet is one of the most famous living modern Orthodox theologians and patrologists. He has earned his PhD in philosophy from the Nancy-Université, and in theology from the University of Strasbourg. Larchet has written 13 books, and lots of articles in a number of scientific journals. His books have been translated into 18 languages. In his speech called «The Dangers Of Speculative Theology And Ways To Prevent Them» at the Third Annual Scientific And Theological International Conference at the Scientific School of Patrological Studies of the Theology Chair in the Moscow Theological Academy (MThA), entitled «Methodological Problems Of Theological And Patristic Studies» of December 24, 2020 held in the MTA, Jean-Claude revealed the non-Orthodox origins of the modern speculative and theoretical theology (ancient and modern philosophy, Catholic scholasticism, Protestantism, «creative» approach in theology, etc.). The author discusses the issues of the nature of theology itself, its proper relationship with philosophy, and the spiritual conditions for its appropriate — i. e. Orthodox and redemptive fulfilment for the benefit of the Church.
