Abstract

The reader is herewith presented with a text by St. Augustine of Hippo newly translated into Russian, «Tractates on the Epistle of Saint John to Parthians», generally better known as The First Epistle of St. Apostle John the Theologian. The date of this writing is generally attributed to 407–415. St. Augustine comments all the five chapters of this Letter (up to 1 John 5, 3), leaving the bigger part of the commentary on chapter 5 unfinished. The leading idea of this writing is love, that in St. Augustine receives variations of the meaning in themes related to the Holy Spirit, Redemption, Christian Church and the moral life of a Christian.
